Shiplap yo!

What the heck is Shiplap? Only one of the hottest "old/new" trends that is taking over the renovation world by storm. Let's be honest of a second, before I watched an episode of Fixer Upper I had no idea what Shiplap was. When Chip and Joanna Gaines kept saying "white Shiplap" on the walls I thought of a burlap sack. A really old burlap sack. One that should only be in the trash pile. I kept watching because I had to see this ugly wall done in it's final state. But then Chip, starts nailing WOOD on the wall. What? Can I please just say that the old frump lady in me took notice and I'm in love with this "new" trend. 

It is a great way to bring character and texture to a wall, ceiling, door way, island, etc. But what is it? Shiplap was used as an OUTER siding for farm houses, barns and sheds. Because of the weather the wood over lapped a little because we all know real wood shrinks and expands in the elements. So wait, how did we come to using this outside wood on the inside?

Older homes are normally cased in, Shiplap. As renovations where done to the old structures drywall was put up over the siding. And as someone who loves unconventional uses for objects I LOVE how Shiplap has now made its way to the other side of the drywall. 

Flippers, who like to reuse materials to keep costs down have found the perfect way to use the old siding. Clean lines, texture and character are added to a space when Shiplap is being used, in the right way. On my Pinterest I have designated a board just for this thing called, Shiplap. I have see it done in white, natural wood, grey, and even black. Check out the many different ways Shiplap has been used to add amazing characters to a room.
